Harris Jewelry Details Response to New York Attorney General

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., November 19, 2018 -- Harris Jewelry today issued the following statement:

Harris Jewelry has detailed its response to the broadly inaccurate, baseless, and overreaching complaint filed by the New York Attorney General last month.

Harris Jewelry – which engages in the fair, transparent, and lawful sale of jewelry, and offers reasonable financing options to those who qualify – operates in full compliance with the laws that regulate its industry. The New York Attorney General has reached the wrong conclusion about the company’s business and the work it does. Specifically:

• For those customers who wish to finance their purchase, Harris Jewelry offers a completely transparent interest rate of 14.99% on purchases – debunking the New York Attorney General’s non-existent legal theory of “hidden interest.”
• It is also important to note that the New York Attorney General has no legal authority to set retail prices in this situation. Harris always strives to provide value to its customers.
• Procedurally, the New York Attorney General abrogated a series of established legal requirements in this matter. The New York Attorney General knowingly violated its confidentiality agreement with Harris Jewelry by intentionally releasing business critical proprietary Harris Jewelry information.
• Over the last 6-plus years, Harris Jewelry has raised more than $1.2 million via Operation: Teddy Bear™. In turn, these funds have been donated to charitable organizations that support military personnel and their families across the country and around the world.

We will continue to vigorously contest these false allegations and will provide updates and developments as they become available. For more than 60 years, Harris Jewelry has sold quality jewelry and watches to active duty military personnel, Reservists, National Guard, and Retirees. Today, the company continues to honor that tradition and enables its customers to purchase quality jewelry designed specifically for them, and to do so on credit terms customized to meet their needs. Harris Jewelry’s filing is here.

Harris Jewelry issued the below statement following the announced settlement by 16 state Attorneys General with Operation Troop Aid:

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., July 19, 2018

For many years, Harris Jewelry has worked with and financially supported a number of charities with a focus on Servicemembers and their families. As a Combined Federal Campaign-approved charity, Operation Troop Aid (OTA) was among those organizations the company supported. We were disappointed to learn about the allegations against OTA brought by various state Attorneys General.

Since January 2018, proceeds from Harris Jewelry’s Operation Teddy Bear have been directed to a different nationally-respected charity that supports Servicemembers and their families. That support, coupled with the company’s role as a drop-off center for the Marine Corps Toys For Tots program, is driven by Harris Jewelry’s heritage as a company founded by Marine and WWII Veteran Jerome L. Harris.

In our charitable initiatives, Harris Jewelry has always delivered the stated financial contribution for each teddy bear sold and all the toys that were provided for donation. We will continue our charitable efforts in support of Servicemembers and their families. Harris Jewelry, founded over 60 years ago, has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since 1983 and has received an A+ rating every year.
